If you can drive you will find there are many more job opportunities available to you, either part-time to boost your income or as a full-time job earning a regular income. There are different options available, such as choosing to work for a company as their employee, or driving self-employed. You may decide to use your own car, with work such as taxi driving, or seek work driving an employer's vehicle when you do delivery driving jobs. Whichever type of driving work you choose, if you enjoy driving it can be a good way to earn money.
Driving work ideas
Delivery jobs
Catalogue delivery and directory distribution work is often available. You can do this kind of work when you need the extra income, such as at Christmas, or build up such work to a regular income. Check your local newspaper for ads or try contacting any companies who regularly employ drivers for deliveries.
Sales Agent/ Representative
There are several direct sales companies that will pay you a commission on your sales. You deliver the brochures door to door, return to take the orders and then deliver the items to the customers homes. As well as being able to drive you should enjoy interacting with customers, and you also need to know your products well and enjoy sales.
Courier driving service
This is using your own car, motorbike or bicycle to deliver items in the city. Bikes are often the most popular choice for this type of delivery work, as they can avoid a lot of the traffic queues and hold-ups that block up our city centres at rush hour. You need to be aware of all the dangers on the road and have good local knowledge of the city.
Taxi and mini cab driving
You need to own a modern saloon car if you intend to use your own vehicle as a taxi, and meet any local requirements, such as 'the knowledge' in London. Minibus drivers with 9 -16 passengers may need a PCV licence. Be ready to work mainly during the evening and week-ends, as this is when there is most demand for taxi drivers.
Van and lorry driving
If you own a van you could offer your services doing deliveries, removals or collections. The 'man with a white van' dominates many of our roads, so there should be plenty of work available if you are fit and flexible. You will need extra training if you intend driving a large goods vehicle, in order to obtain your LGV licence. The investment will open up the driving jobs you can do and increase your rate of pay.
Driving jobs can be an excellent way to earn extra cash if you are working from home. Many driving jobs can fit in with your available free hours and require little training. Do check your insurance cover for any vehicle you are planning on driving for work, as a domestic use policy will not generally cover you for business use.
